Have you ever pondered the difference between creating a coloring book and writing a storybook? At first glance, they seem worlds apart. Yet, for me, a narrative thread is vital in both, especially since my forte lies in crafting children’s picture books.

The Spark of Creation

Consider the journey of my latest coloring book. It didn’t begin with its current theme of birds and flowers. Initially, I envisioned a tribute to ‘Famous Paintings’, aiming to craft an educational coloring experience. Imagine coloring your own rendition of the ‘Mona Lisa’ with her enigmatic smile, or ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. Yet, I hit a snag. Portraits challenge me, particularly faces. Did I want to dedicate a whole book to something even I found daunting?

Then, there were the landscapes. Imagine the vibrant, swirling skies of ‘Starry Night’ or the dynamic motion captured in ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’. But then, I pondered: Is modern art more aligned with my style? The idea of transforming ‘The Persistence of Memory’ into a modern critique by swapping the iconic melting clocks for cell phones crossed my mind. However, I decided to adhere to the traditional approach. Perhaps something akin to the original essence of the artwork would be more fitting.

Beyond the Brushstroke

This led me to ponder—why do we color? For fun, relaxation, or perhaps both? Would these famous artworks provide that? My admiration for older paintings remained, but portraits felt overwhelming, and landscapes lacked the intricate details suited for colored pencils.

It was amidst these musings that Alexia and Phoebe’s next adventure sparked in my mind, merging my love for storytelling with the coloring book concept. Imagine a book filled with savanna and jungle scenes, teeming with exotic animals and lush landscapes. Take, for instance, the image before you: a pair of graceful flamingos standing serenely in the water, their reflections a whisper on the surface.

Yet, a narrative is what truly completes a collection of images for me. A story is essential. The project started out with a burst of creativity, producing 10 to 15 vibrant scenes. But as the collection expanded, it became apparent that the images, while beautiful on their own, were missing a crucial element – the connective thread that weaves individual pictures into a cohesive coloring book with soul. The storytelling component, which I value deeply, just wasn’t present, and this realization naturally led me to reconsider the direction of the project.

A Story Unfolds

Recognizing the need for a compelling storyline, my focus shifted. I turned my attention to a subject that always felt close to home – birds. Not the flamboyant tropical types, but the quaint charm of garden birds, amidst flowers and greenery. Yet, the story still needed depth. Enter the vintage treasures: a lantern, an old coffee cup, a bundle of love letters—each a story piece, inviting adults to dive into a narrative hidden within the coloring pages.

Final Thoughts

And so, the essence of my ‘Birds and Blooms Coloring Book’ was realized—a tapestry of art and narrative, crafted to bring both enjoyment and peace. This journey, from a fledgling concept to a richly woven coloring experience, underscores my conviction: like the pages of a cherished picture book, every coloring page should unfold its own unique story.

As this post draws to a close, a flicker of adventure stirs within me. The journey through art need not end here. Picture this: the initial set of jungle images evolving into a full-fledged jungle adventure coloring book. Imagine adding just a few key elements—sly snakes, a majestic spider, and a bold explorer, a heroine with the wit and bravery reminiscent of Indiana Jones—could give life to an extraordinary narrative. This prospect is indeed enticing. The 10-15 images I’ve already crafted could be the foundation for a thrilling tale of discovery and courage.

This idea is perched on the brink of becoming reality, envisioning a coloring book where each page plunges deeper into the jungle’s heart, each image part of a larger, unfolding story. Who knows? This may well be the next creative voyage I undertake.

Yet, as the allure of untamed adventures calls, let’s remember the journey at hand. The ‘Birds and Blooms Coloring Book’ is here, inviting you to infuse it with color, to bring its pages to life. It is my sincere hope that you find as much joy and serenity in coloring these pages as I did in creating them.
